ESPN: Despite poor record, Sacramento Kings head coach Doug Christie will remain in his position next season.

According to a report by ESPN's Anthony Slater on Sunday, 55-year-old Sacramento Kings head coach Doug Christie will remain in his position next season.

Christie played for the Sacramento Kings for four and a half seasons (2000-2005), during which he was named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team once and the All-Defensive Second Team three times. He began serving as an assistant coach for the Kings in August 2021, assisting three head coaches: Luke Walton, Alvin Gentry, and Mike Brown.

In December 2024, Christie took over as interim head coach after the Kings fired Brown. He led the Kings to a 27-24 record and was promoted to the permanent head coach position on May 1, 2025. According to The TA, the two sides signed a three-year contract at the time, with a team option for the 2027/28 season.

However, Christie's performance since becoming the permanent head coach has fallen far short of expectations: under his leadership, the Kings currently sit second-to-last in the Western Conference with a record of 22 wins and 60 losses. This poor record sparked speculation about his future, but Slater offered a completely different perspective in his report.

Slater explicitly stated that the Kings' management believes the severe injury crisis has masked Christie's true coaching abilities. With key players like Keegan Murray, Domantas Sabonis, Zach LaVine, and De'Andre Hunter all sidelined with injuries, Christie has consistently failed to fully integrate the expected roster. The management therefore concluded that the current record does not reflect Christie's coaching level, and he deserves more time to prove himself.

On the other hand, Christie's effectiveness in developing young talent has been highly praised by the Kings' management. The rapid growth of rookies such as Maxim Reno, Dylan Caldwell, and Nick Clifford has given the Kings hope for rebuilding. As the Kings continue to push for a younger roster, Christie is seen as a suitable candidate to guide the development of new talent.

Based on the above considerations, the Kings have decided to keep Christie as head coach for the 2026/27 season. However, they will continue to evaluate him further.
