NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said Friday night that all indications suggest LeBron James will not retire next season.
Despite being 41 years old, LeBron James still has the ability to help the team this season. As of the end of the regular season on April 12, he played 60 games for the Los Angeles Lakers, averaging 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists and 1.2 steals in 33.2 minutes per game, with a field goal percentage of 51.5% and a three-point percentage of 31.7%.
Adam Silver was full of praise for LeBron James' performance this season. Speaking on WFAN radio's "The Catton Show" on Friday, he said, "I hope LeBron keeps playing, as long as he wants to. He's not just a 41-year-old veteran with the all-time high score and numerous records. His current level of play is still extremely high; he's not just someone who's on the court."
“We often see athletes in other sports become less competitive towards the end of their careers, but he still maintains an extremely high level of performance. Some of the things he does are difficult even for 25-year-old players.”
LeBron James' contract with the Lakers runs until the end of the 2025/26 season, at which point he will become a free agent. Despite widespread rumors that James will retire this summer, Adam Silver seems unfazed: "I haven't spoken to him since the end of the season. All the indications I've received suggest that he plans to continue playing in the NBA next year. He has never expressed any intention to retire."
It remains unclear where LeBron James will go after his contract expires this summer, but he will certainly have no trouble finding a team once he enters free agency. Previously, it was reported that both the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors had expressed interest in James, and the Lakers have not ruled out the possibility of his return.
