FIFA recently announced that it has removed all tickets for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Toronto (BMO Stadium) from its official resale platform.
This move is a direct response to the Fans First Act passed last week in Ontario, Canada. The act explicitly prohibits the resale of event tickets on the secondary market at prices higher than face value.
It is understood that the ticket sales for this World Cup are nearing their end, with over 5 million of the approximately 6 million tickets already sold. Currently, apart from the 6 matches hosted in Toronto (including the opening match between Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 12), resale tickets for the remaining 15 venues are still being traded on the official FIFA platform.
FIFA has long been criticized by fans for its variable pricing mechanism and the lack of caps on resale prices. On current resale platforms, there have even been outrageous instances of sellers listing a third-class ticket for the final for a staggering $11.5 million.
In response to the controversy, FIFA has argued that it is a non-profit organization and that all proceeds will be reinvested in the development of football worldwide. Regarding the recent removal of the app from sale, FIFA stated that its initial intention in operating the resale platform was to protect fans and that it must comply with local regulations.
Officials anticipate that after completing compliance adjustments to the relevant systems, tickets for the Toronto event will be relisted on resale platforms in strict accordance with Ontario's new law prohibiting price gouging.
