The League of Legends MMO project has been in development for more than four years, but Riot Games still seems to be trying to catch up with World of Warcraft.
Recently, Riot Games co-founder and chief product officer Mark Merrill said in an interview with Game File that the unnamed MMO "is probably the project that I've personally spent the most time on."
This MMORPG based on the world's most famous MOBA game was first announced in 2020, and then it was silent for a long time. The last time the project made significant progress, Merrill revealed that the project had been "reset" because the previous version was "like a normal MMO, just dressed in the cloak of Runeterra."
Despite the twists and turns in the development process, Merrill is still determined that the project is worth moving forward. He explained: "Many players who love MMOs will miss the good old days and are eager to regain that experience. I think this is a very worthwhile goal to pursue, even though it is really difficult to achieve."
Merrill said that MMO not only needs to be perfect on multiple levels, but also build a world that players are willing to immerse themselves in for a long time, and it also requires a strong team to realize this vision. He admitted that there were many challenges in the development process, but he still believed: "If Riot Games' goal is to make the player experience better, then we should seize such opportunities. In particular, I believe that players really want to explore freely in Runeland."
Although there is still no exact release date, it is certain that this League of Legends MMO is still being polished, and Riot Games hopes that it will eventually bring players a truly immersive masterpiece.
