With the official launch of the 15th season of League of Legends, a large number of updates and changes have come along. However, the huge adjustment of the free reward system in the game has aroused widespread doubts among players about Riot Games.
Like previous seasons, this season also brings many changes such as map updates and new gameplay. At the same time, the new battle pass system replaces the free reward mechanism familiar to players, causing Masterwork Chest and Hextech Chest to completely lose their meaning.
As early as November last year, Riot revealed the details of the changes for Season 15 in the development blog. The new battle pass system will last for four version cycles, providing players with two paid and free paths. However, in order to simplify the game's appearance reward experience, the developer decided to completely remove the free Masterwork Chest and Hextech Chest.
Currently, players can only purchase Hextech Chests and their keys through the store with real money, and Masterwork Chests have been completely removed from the game. This change has caused controversy because Hextech Chests may only contain key fragments or hero fragments, rather than the appearance props that players expect.
Instead, players can get a skin (currently Spider Queen Elise's skin) and some other items, such as blue essence and emotes, through the free path of the battle pass. However, this free skin has neither a unique recall animation nor attractive special effects, which disappointed many players. Riot mentioned in a blog post that free players can only get "about nine skins" per year on average, so the free rewards of the pass are to maintain this statistical level.
In addition, Riot has removed the mechanism for obtaining treasure chests through the hero proficiency system and changed it to battle pass mission rewards.
Since Hextech Chests can only be purchased with real money, many players expressed their dissatisfaction on the League of Legends Reddit forum. One user pointed out that "now you can only buy keys and chests, and the fragments can only gather dust in your inventory." Even if players get keys from leveling rewards, these keys are now useless because there are no free chests to open in the game.
Although the current prospects for the appearance system of League of Legends seem bleak, the collective actions of players may promote change and inject new impetus into developers and players. I hope Riot can listen to the voices of players and provide a more balanced and friendly reward system for the game.
