According to The Sun, Rashford's agent team, his two brothers, had negotiated with Barcelona as early as January, but failed to reach an agreement. In the end, Villa became his most realistic option at the time because Ruben Amorim explicitly excluded him from Manchester United's plans. Although Villa included a £40 million buyout clause in the loan contract, the report said that Rashford did not think he would play for the central England team for a long time.
