Victor Wembanyama will miss the rest of the season with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder

San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder and will miss the remainder of the season, just hours before the Spurs prepare to face the Phoenix Suns.

The San Antonio Spurs said Victor Wembanyama's condition is deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder, which has sidelined him since returning from the All-Star Game this week. The condition is almost always treated with blood-thinning medications, but this usually prevents players from participating in contact sports such as basketball. Therefore, athletes who participate in contact sports avoid using the medication because of the higher likelihood of bleeding.

The San Antonio Spurs are reportedly optimistic about the long-term health of Victor Wembanyama and believe the player will return to play next season. Victor Wembanyama, the current Kia Rookie of the Year, had an outstanding season in 2023-24, averaging 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 3.6 blocks in 71 games for the team.

The disease has affected NBA players before, including now-retired Hall of Famer Chris Bosh, whose career was cut short after he was diagnosed with blood clots, but some athletes have recovered and are even better than before after dealing with blood clots.
