Eddie Howe considering appeal against Anthony Gordon's red card

Eddie Howe says Newcastle will consider appealing against Anthony Gordon's red card in the FA Cup against Brighton.

Gordon was sent off for a two-handed shove on Jan-Paul van Heck in the Brighton penalty area just before the end of normal time in the FA Cup fifth round on Sunday, before Brighton won 2-1 in the second half of extra time.

The red card will result in Gordon being banned for three games, including the League Cup final against Liverpool on March 16. However, coach Howe believes the England winger had no malicious intent and said the club would seek to overturn the punishment if there were reasonable grounds.

Howe said after the game: "Of course, if we analyze and think there is reason to appeal, we will act without hesitation. I need to watch it again, and I can't give a fair evaluation now. But I know Gordon, he has no ill intentions."

Newcastle are hoping to persuade the FA to lift the 24-year-old's ban, allowing him to play in the final at Wembley against Arne Slaughton's Liverpool later this month.
