Pelicans forward Trey Murphy III will miss the rest of the season due to a torn labrum and partial rotator cuff in his right shoulder. The team said it will update Murphy's injury status in due course.
Trey Murphy III was selected by the Memphis Grizzlies with the 17th pick in the first round in 2021 and was subsequently traded to the New Orleans Pelicans. So far, he has played 251 regular season games for the Pelicans, averaging 13.7 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game, with a shooting percentage of 45.4% and a three-point shooting percentage of 38.3%.
This season is the best season of Murphy's career. The 25-year-old averaged 21.2 points per game, an increase of 6.4 points from last season, and his rebounds (5.1) and assists (3.5) were all personal highs. He also made more than 150 three-pointers for three consecutive seasons. However, Murphy dislocated his right shoulder in the game against the Pistons on Monday while fighting for a loose ball. He left the game after playing for only one minute. The Pelicans eventually lost 81-127, suffering their seventh loss in the last eight games.
The Pelicans are currently ranked 14th in the Eastern Conference with a record of 18 wins and 51 losses, and have long missed the playoffs. Murphy's season-ending injury will undoubtedly further increase the Pelicans' chances of winning the lottery.
