Boston Celtics sold for record $6.1 billion

A consortium led by American businessman William Chisholm has reached an agreement to acquire the NBA team Boston Celtics for a record $6.1 billion.

This transaction not only surpassed the $6 billion acquisition of the NFL Washington Commanders in 2023, but also surpassed the $4 billion sale of the NBA Phoenix Suns in 2022. The Boston Celtics' transaction became the highest acquisition record in North American sports history.

Chisholm stated in an interview that he is a lifelong fan of the Boston Celtics. "Growing up on the North Shore and going to school in New England, I have been a lifelong fan of the Boston Celtics my whole life," Chisholm said.

"I know the importance of the Boston Celtics to the city of Boston, and the role this team plays in the community is different from any other city's team in the United States. As the new leader of the team, I know my responsibility to the people of Boston and am willing to accept this challenge."

The Boston Celtics were purchased by the Groesbeck family for $360 million in 2002. However, the original owner of the team, Groesbeck, will continue to serve as CEO and team management until the end of the 2027-28 season. At that time, Chisholm will take over the overall operation of the Boston Celtics.

Among NBA teams, the Boston Celtics are the team with the most championships, winning a total of 18 NBA championships. This season, the Boston Celtics are ranked second in the Eastern Conference with 50 wins and 19 losses, and have basically confirmed their promotion to the playoffs.
