Wolves striker Mateus Cunha has been banned for an extra match and fined £50,000 for his behaviour following an FA Cup tie, the Football Association announced on Friday.
In the FA Cup match on March 1, Wolves challenged Bournemouth away. Cunha clashed with his opponent Kerkez Miloš and was shown a red card by the referee, which resulted in Cunha being suspended for 3 games.
Wolves tied the game 1-1 and entered a penalty shootout, but eventually lost 4-5 and failed to advance to the FA Cup quarter-finals. When leaving the field after the game, Cunha had an argument with the referee, teammates and staff, resulting in additional punishment by the English Football Association.
The 25-year-old Cunha was not punished for misconduct for the first time. This is the second time this season that he has been punished. In December last year, after Wolves' Premier League match against Ipswich Town, Cunha clashed with stadium security and was suspended for two games.
Cunha is currently on international duty with the Brazilian national team and his club ban will keep him out of four Wolves games. This means that Cunha will be unable to attend Wolves' Premier League games against West Ham United and Ipswich Town. Cunha will return as early as the match against Tottenham on April 13.
Wolves have performed poorly this season. In 29 Premier League games this season, they have 7 wins, 5 draws and 17 losses, with 26 points, ranking 17th, 9 points ahead of the relegation zone. Wolves must win the remaining games to avoid relegation.
