Stuttgart issued a statement on Saturday, announcing that it has renewed its contract with Sebastian Hoeness for one year. Hoeness's term at Stuttgart was originally scheduled to last until 2027, and has now been extended to June 30, 2028. His assistant coach David Cresidro has also renewed his contract until 2028.
German sports channel SPORT1 pointed out that Hoeness's new contract no longer contains a termination clause. He has been linked with RB Leipzig recently, and the team's coach Marco Rose is likely to leave this summer. According to Kicker's report at the time, Hoeness's original contract contained an 8 million euro termination clause, but it only applied to clubs with European qualification. After he renewed his contract with Stuttgart, the new contract reportedly no longer contains the relevant clause.
Hoeness, 42, was the head coach of Bayern Munich II and Hoffenheim, and took over Stuttgart, which was at the bottom of the league at the time, in April 2024. He first led the team to successfully avoid relegation through the play-offs, and then qualified for the Champions League as the Bundesliga runner-up in the second season.
Stuttgart has been in a slump this season as it has been fighting on multiple fronts. After 26 rounds, it is currently ranked 10th in the Bundesliga with 10 wins, 7 draws and 9 losses and 37 points. However, Stuttgart is still confident in Hoeness. After completing the contract extension, Alexander Weller, chairman of the board of directors of the Stuttgart club, explained: "The cooperation between Stuttgart and Sebastian Hoeness has been highly compatible since the beginning. Sebastian led us from the abyss of relegation to the Champions League as the runner-up of the Bundesliga. He established a clear tactical style and significantly improved the personal abilities of many players."
“It has always been clear to us that we want to work with Sebastian for the long term. Our daily exchanges are based on a high level of trust. He is a perfect match for the club’s goals both professionally and personally. We are confident that under his leadership we will continue on the path to success. Therefore, we are very happy about the early renewal.”
Stuttgart sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth then added: "The fans, the city, the tradition and the economic environment together make Stuttgart one of the most attractive clubs in Germany. Together we want to lead Stuttgart into a successful future. To this end, we have secured the retention of the ideal coach, Sebastian Hoeness, through a long-term contract extension."
“In the past two years, Sebastian has demonstrated with impressive performance that he is adept at dealing with various challenges in football, whether it is a relegation battle or the Champions League. In the process of working with Sebastian, we can always feel his motivation to push the team forward, move towards higher goals and achieve success. We are full of expectations for future cooperation.”
Hoeness himself said: "I am very happy about the contract extension because I firmly believe that we can achieve more together. I came to Stuttgart about two years ago. At that time, the team ranked bottom of the Bundesliga and the competitive situation was quite severe. Despite this, I still feel that coaching Stuttgart is the right decision, and the contract extension is the same now."
" From the very beginning, my cooperation with the club management, including Alexander Weiler, Fabian Wohlgemuth and Christian Gentner, was based on a high level of trust. Together we have embarked on a successful path after the relegation play-offs and have made it all the way to the Champions League. We want and must continue to work hard at all levels of the club in order to achieve long-term success. This also includes further improving and strengthening our squad. Our goal is to ensure that Stuttgart has the strength to compete in European competitions in the long term.
" Now we should focus on the final stage of the Bundesliga season. Of course, we are all looking forward to the DFB-Pokal semi-final and are eager to take the final step towards Berlin."
