Germany are about to host Italy in the second leg of their UEFA Nations League quarter-final, and coach Julian Nagelsmann is hoping his side can write their own history.
Italy won the 2006 World Cup by beating host Germany 2-0. The defeat is still fresh in the minds of German fans, so this quarter-final is crucial for Germany.
Although Germany beat Italy 2-1 in the first leg away and returned to their home court with a lead, Nagelsmann's goal is not only to advance to the semi-finals, but to win with all his strength.
At the pre-match press conference, Nagelsmann said: "I remember in 2006, I still don't accept that Germany didn't win that game. But for me, it's more important to be in the present, not in the past. We want to write our own history."
"I'm not afraid of Italy's speed, we are in good shape and clear-headed. We have got good solutions, the key is to create chances... Hopefully we get the win."
German striker Jonathan Bukater started in the first leg but was substituted in the second half. Nagelsmann has revealed that Bukater may not be able to play in the second leg due to illness.
When asked about Bukater's condition, Nagelsmann replied: "He will not participate in training today. We will see what happens tomorrow. I will make some adjustments to the starting lineup and some tactical adjustments, but I will not disclose the details."
