Serie A club Juventus announced that it has sacked head coach Thiago Motta and appointed former player Igor Tudor as its new head coach.
Last June, Juventus signed Motta on a three-year contract. Previously, Motta led Bologna to qualify for the Champions League, and his performance was impressive, so Juventus hoped that he could bring revival to the team.
However, under Motta's leadership, Juventus' performance has not been as good as expected. In the last two Serie A games, Juventus suffered consecutive painful defeats. This caused Juventus to drop to fifth place in the Serie A rankings, overtaken by Bologna, and 12 points behind the leader Inter Milan, and the hope of winning the championship is slim.
Therefore, Juventus decided to fire Motta and issued a statement saying: "Juventus announces the removal of Thiago Motta as the head coach of the men's first team. At the same time, we also announce the appointment of Igor Tudor as the first team coach, who will lead the team for the first training session tomorrow."
According to media reports, Tudor's contract with Juventus is only until the end of this season. If the team successfully qualifies for the Champions League, the contract will be automatically renewed for one year. However, Juventus has the right to decide whether to exercise the renewal clause before July 30.
The 46-year-old Tudor played for Juventus for most of his playing career and served as assistant coach to head coach Andrea Pirlo for a season in 2020. Tudor's coaching career began in 2013 and he has coached Udinese, Verona and Lazio.
