Sevilla signs 26-year-old left winger Ruben Vargas from Augsburg on a four-and-a-half-year contract

Sevilla officially announced that the 26-year-old Swiss international Ruben Vargas has transferred from Augsburg. He will wear the No. 5 jersey and the contract is signed until June 2029.

According to other sources, Vargas' transfer fee is 2.5 million euros plus floating. His transfer value on Transfermarkt is 7 million euros, but the actual transfer fee is significantly lower than the valuation because his contract with Augsburg only has half a year left.

In this regard, Augsburg sports director Malenko Jurendic explained: "We had hoped to complete the contract extension with Ruben before the winter window. However, Ruben informed us that he did not want to renew the contract. Given our financial responsibility to the club, we have jointly found a solution that is beneficial to both parties."

"We would like to thank Reuben for his many years of service to Augsburg and wish him all the best in Spain."

Sevilla coach Garcia Pimienta said: "He is a player who wants to keep improving in his career. He joins a great club with the goal of helping us get back to the top as soon as possible. As an ambitious international player, he wants to constantly improve himself and move to a higher level. He joins us with plenty of energy and enthusiasm."

He is the type of player we dream of, and I am grateful to the sporting director and the president for bringing him in quickly after the departures of Ocampos and Jesus Navas in September and January. I am sure he will adapt well to our style of play and make a positive impact for us.”

Ruben Vargas mainly plays as a left winger, but can also play as a right midfielder, right winger, attacking midfielder, etc. He came from Lucerne's youth training and made his debut for the first team in the Swiss Super League on August 27, 2017.

In July 2019, Vargas transferred from Lucerne to Augsburg for 4 million euros. So far, he has made 161 appearances in Augsburg, scoring 23 goals and providing 19 assists.

After completing the transfer, Vargas said: "I have been looking forward to this moment for a long time and I am very happy to join Sevilla. Everything is clear. Victor Horta (Sevilla sports director) and the coach gave me a good impression in the first meeting. I told my agent that I want to join Sevilla."

"I already have some knowledge of the club. Sevilla has a long history and has won many honors. My good friend Djibril Sow (Sevilla midfielder) also recommended it to me. He told me that Sevilla is a big club with very enthusiastic fans."

"I love the Sevilla anthem and now I have to learn it. I also want to improve my Spanish, so I'm very happy."

Sevilla has not had a good record this season. After 18 rounds, it ranks 14th in La Liga with 6 wins, 4 draws and 8 losses and 22 points. Vargas said: "I know the team is in a difficult situation, but everyone knows what kind of team Sevilla is. I hope to bring positive energy, not think too much about the pressure, and help the team when it needs it. I want to win the game, lead Sevilla to the height it deserves, and return to the Europa League or the Champions League. This is my goal."
