New Orleans Pelicans executive vice president of basketball operations David Griffin announced that forward Zion Williamson has been suspended one game for violating team policy.
Zion also missed today's game against the Philadelphia 76ers at the Wells Fargo Center. In the end, the New Orleans Pelicans defeated the 76ers 123-115 despite Zion's absence.
Zion, 24, entered the NBA as the No. 1 pick in 2019, but his career has been limited by frequent injuries. So far this season, he has only played 7 regular season games for the Pelicans, averaging 22.6 points, 7.7 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 1 steal and 1.14 blocks per game, with a shooting percentage of 47.1%. The Pelicans also had a poor record in the absence of key players such as Zion and Ingram, and are currently ranked last in the Western Conference with a record of 8 wins and 31 losses.
According to ESPN reporter Shams Charania, Zion's suspension stems from his failure to catch yesterday's flight to Philadelphia. NBA insider Chris Haynes further pointed out that in addition to missing yesterday's flight, Zion has also been late for several training sessions this season. His behavior has seriously affected the Pelicans' overall performance and exacerbated the deterioration of the locker room atmosphere. In order to restore team discipline and improve standards, the Pelicans management finally decided to suspend Zion for one game.
"The one-game suspension was issued because he failed to meet team standards," David Griffin said in a statement. "His commitment to the team is of utmost importance to us, as it is to him personally. He has taken responsibility for his actions and reaffirmed his commitment to the team today. We are confident that he will continue to grow positively on and off the court."
Zion said: "I take full responsibility for this suspension. I have made great efforts in the recovery process and hope to recover and play for the team as soon as possible. There is no excuse for being late for team activities. I have apologized to Ms. Benson, my teammates and coaches, and I also owe an apology to the fans. As a teammate and a member of the team, I can and will do better."
According to official news, Zion will join the team tomorrow.
