Dutch e-sports powerhouse Liquid was subjected to fierce cyberbullying on Tuesday after its player insulted Japan after losing a match.
According to reports from multiple e-sports news websites, the incident originated from a Rainbow Six: Siege match that took place a few days ago.
At that time, Liquid played against CAG Osaka in the RE:L0:AD 2025 Group Stage.
In the end, Liquid lost to CAG Osaka by 5:7 in this match.
After the match, DiasLucasBr, a Brazilian support player in the Liquid team roster, who was unwilling to accept losing the match, deliberately posted a GIF of the Hiroshima nuclear bomb explosion during World War II through his personal official X (Twitter) account.
As soon as his tweet was posted, it attracted cyberbullying from netizens around the world for insulting Japan.
Later, Liquid's sponsor Honda Motor immediately announced that it would terminate all sponsorship contracts with the e-sports club, this instantly caused Liquid to lose a huge amount of sponsorship funds from the famous car manufacturer who had sponsored them for 6 years.
As the criticism became more intense, DiasLucasBr and Liquid finally issued an apology through their official accounts, claiming that CAG Osaka had listened to and accepted their apology.
However, this statement did not gain the acceptance and understanding of Japanese netizens. Many people believed that the apology statements of both parties lacked sincerity, causing Liquid's StarCraft 2, Dota 2, Counter Strike 2, Overwatch 2 and other divisions' e-sports team members to continue to be cyberbullied.
