Tottenham Hotspur defeated Hoffenheim away from home in the Europa League group stage with a difficult victory, ending the game with a score of 3-2, successfully jumping to sixth place in the standings, one step closer to the knockout stage.
Prior to this match, Ange Postecoglou's team was in ninth place, a difficult situation. However, this crucial victory puts them in a favorable position to automatically advance to the last 16. Spurs will face Elfsborg, their last opponent in the group stage, on January 30, and they are currently one point ahead of their direct promotion rivals. After the game, Postecoglou said: "This is a good situation for us."
He said: “It gives us a great chance of getting into the top eight and getting an extra week to rest - which is almost as important as going straight through.”
"We hope to seize this opportunity because the schedule is very tight and this period of respite is crucial for us. This is also a great motivation."
James Maddison opened the scoring for Tottenham with a wonderful long-range shot in the 3rd minute, and then Son Heung-min extended the score to 2-0 through a deflection in the 23rd minute. In the first half, Tottenham firmly controlled the situation, but Hoffenheim launched a fierce counterattack in the second half.
The turning point came in the 65th minute when Spurs goalkeeper Brandon Austin was awarded a penalty for a foul on Hoffenheim striker Max Molstedt in the penalty area, but the decision was overturned after the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) stepped in. However, just seconds later, Hoffenheim equalized through Anton Stach's close-range shot.
Just when the home team had hopes of a counterattack, Son Heung-min expanded the lead again with an accurate long-range shot, making the score 3-1.
In the final stage of the game, Hoffenheim substitute David Mokwa Ntusu scored with a header, chasing the score to 2 to 3. As the home team pressed forward, Tottenham was forced to replace core players Son Heung-min and Maddison, and sent in young players Callum Olusesi and Will Lankshire.
Under Hoffenheim's fierce attack, Tottenham's makeshift defense (including left-back Archie Gray) was severely tested, but they finally managed to hold on to the victory. This victory ended Tottenham's three-match winless streak in European competitions and also added confidence to the next games.
