Hoffenheim officially announced on Monday the loan signing of American winger Cole Campbell from Borussia Dortmund until the end of the 2025/26 season. Campbell will wear the number 20 jersey for Hoffenheim, and the contract includes a buy-out clause of €10-12 million.
Other reports indicate that the loan fee is approximately 1.5 million euros.
Regarding Campbell's arrival, Hoffenheim's sporting director, Andreas Schickel, commented: "Cole is an extremely talented winger with enormous potential, and we have been closely monitoring him for some time. He is very fast and has excellent one-on-one ability. He can play a variety of roles on the attacking flank. We believe he can bring an additional boost to the team."
Campbell, 19, was born in Houston, Texas, USA. He made his first-team debut for Gimnasia y Salzburg in the Icelandic League Cup on February 13, 2021. He then briefly played for Brenda Blik, winning the Icelandic Premier League title with the team.
In July 2022, Campbell officially joined Borussia Dortmund's youth academy. He was called up to Dortmund's first team in October 2024, but has only made 7 substitute appearances so far.
Frustrated by limited playing time, Campbell expressed his desire to transfer to Dortmund's management. He hopes to get more playing time at Hoffenheim and earn a place on the US men's national team for the 2026 World Cup.
Campbell, son of Icelandic women's football legend Rachel Kálvársson, holds dual US and Icelandic citizenship. He made seven appearances for Iceland's U17 team before moving to the US youth team in 2024.
After completing the transfer, Campbell said: "I am very much looking forward to playing for Hoffenheim. I am incredibly excited. I can't wait to meet all my teammates and the whole team. I have heard a lot of good things about them. Hoffenheim is said to have a family-like atmosphere, which excites me a lot, and I am looking forward to playing for the team."
“I am very fast and good at one-on-one breakthroughs. I will try my best to play exciting games and deliver outstanding performances on the pitch.”
"My interactions with the manager and the team have made me feel like I'm part of a family at the club. I've learned that the manager prefers attacking football, which aligns perfectly with my own playing philosophy. I'm really looking forward to playing for him," Campbell concluded.
