Southampton striker Damian Towns has joined Hamburg on loan, with the contract including a buy-out clause.

Newly promoted Bundesliga side Hamburg announced on Wednesday that they have secured the half-season loan of American striker Damian Towns from Southampton. The loan fee for Towns could reach €500,000, with Hamburg covering the remaining salary.

According to Sky Sports Germany, the loan is expected to include a buy-out clause worth €9 million to €10 million. If performance-related bonuses are included, the final transaction amount could reach €12 million.

Towns received his early youth training at Schweinfurt and Ingolstadt before making his Bundesliga debut for Cologne on September 23, 2023. He subsequently made 42 appearances for Cologne, scoring 13 goals and providing 6 assists.

In July 2025, Towns transferred to Southampton for €8 million. To date, he has made 14 appearances for Southampton and contributed one assist.

Regarding Towns' signing, Hamburg board member Eric Howell commented: "We've been pushing forward Damien's transfer for the past few days, and we're delighted that he was ultimately convinced by Hamburg and our development plans. Klaus and his team have done an excellent job. This signing once again proves that we can effectively communicate the combined advantages of the club and the city as a base to the player."

Hamburg's sporting director, Klaus Costa, added: "With the arrival of Damien, we filled the gap in our squad early in the winter transfer window. He is familiar with the Bundesliga and possesses both immediate impact and development potential. As a striker, Damien has advantages in size, speed, and positioning. His strength in transitions and his threat in the penalty area make him a perfect fit for the transfer goals we set together with the coaching staff."

Towns himself said: "I am very happy to join Hamburg and look forward to embarking on a new journey with the club. After a pleasant conversation with the sporting director, I am full of confidence for the challenges ahead. Now, I can't wait to show my strengths on the pitch and return to the Bundesliga."

According to the official statement, Towns will wear the number 19 jersey for Hamburg during his loan spell.
