The NBA has officially fined Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown $35,000 for his outburst against referees after last week's game.
The incident was sparked by the Celtics' narrow 95-100 home loss to the San Antonio Spurs on January 10th. Despite Brown's outstanding performance, scoring 27 points, grabbing 8 rebounds, and dishing out 7 assists, he didn't get a single free throw attempt under the intense pressure of the game.
The statistics revealed a stark contrast: the Celtics were awarded only 4 free throws, while the Spurs had a whopping 20. This disparity in officiating infuriated Brown. In a post-game interview, Brown bluntly stated, "This is utter nonsense. I was prepared to take the free throws."
"We give it our all on defense, but the opponent gets a hair's breadth of calls easily; while I drive hard to the basket, without flopping or avoiding contact, and I don't get any calls at all. This inconsistency in officiating is insane."
Brown even directly criticized the referee team for their terrible performance and continued to express his dissatisfaction on social media, displaying an attitude that he didn't care if they were to be penalized.
Brown's anger wasn't unfounded. Data shows the Celtics attempt 4.4 fewer free throws per game this season, the worst deficit in the league. In contrast, the Spurs have the second-highest free throw advantage in the league.
The 29-year-old Brown is in red-hot form this season, averaging a career-high 29.5 points per game, and is in the second year of his five-year, $285 million max contract. The Celtics currently have a record of 24 wins and 14 losses. Although they have won five of their last seven games, a loss to the Spurs broke their winning streak.
