According to ESPN's Shams Charania, Mark Williams' trade from the Charlotte Hornets to the Los Angeles Lakers has been canceled. The news has also been confirmed by the Hornets.
On the eve of the 2025 NBA trade deadline, the Lakers sent rookie Dalton Knecht, wing Cam Reddish, an unprotected first-round pick in 2031 and a 2030 first-round swap right to the Hornets in exchange for center Mark Williams.
However, just three days later, the Lakers announced the cancellation of the deal. Shams Charania later revealed the specific reason for the cancellation of the deal: "Mark Williams was found to have multiple problems during the Lakers' physical examination and ultimately failed the examination. However, the reason was not due to his back."
Another reporter, Brett Siegel, added that the Hornets did not provide the Lakers with "adequate and accurate" medical records and medical history at the time of the trade.
Mark Williams, 23, was selected by the Hornets with the 15th pick in the first round in 2022, but he has played only 62 games in the past two seasons due to a back injury. So far this season, he has played 23 times for the Hornets, averaging 15.6 points, 9.6 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.17 blocks, and a shooting percentage of 58.6%.
When the Lakers traded for Mark Williams, his health immediately became a focus of attention. Although there were reports that the Lakers were not concerned, the physical examination results showed that the actual situation was quite different from the expectations.
