The Miami Heat announced on their official website Saturday that they have waived shooting guard Terry Rozier, who is under federal investigation for alleged illegal gambling.
In fact, The Athletic had already reported in March that the Heat had been planning to waive Rozier near the end of the regular season for a month, and this plan has now been put into action.
This announcement marks the end of the former Boston Celtics star's two-and-a-half-year spell with the Miami Heat.
Rozier was traded to the Heat from the Charlotte Hornets in January 2024, but he has not played a single game this season.
He was relegated to the bench in the Heat's season opener and was arrested the following morning.
On October 23, 2025, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that Rozier and Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups were arrested by the FBI for alleged involvement in illegal sports gambling.
The case involves the use of confidential NBA information to manipulate game results, with the amount involved reaching tens of millions of dollars.
According to the indictment, Rozier participated in an illegal betting scheme starting in 2023, providing gamblers with confidential information on player availability and injuries.
At least seven NBA games were used for betting, including those against the Charlotte Hornets, Orlando Magic, Portland Trail Blazers, Los Angeles Lakers, and Toronto Raptors. Prosecutors allege that in three of these games, players deliberately left the game midway or faked injuries to influence the odds.
The Heat player left the game early in the first quarter of a March 2023 game against the New Orleans Pelicans. A childhood friend subsequently sold this information to gamblers for $100,000, and the bets won hundreds of thousands of dollars.
While Chauncey Billups was not directly named in the Rozier case, the description of him as an accomplice in the indictment closely matches his profile.
Billups reportedly informed gamblers that several key Trail Blazers players would miss the March 2023 game against the Chicago Bulls, causing market volatility.
Prosecutors allege that Billups and Rozier are both charged with wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. Both have been suspended by the NBA pending a federal investigation.
During their suspension, both Billups and Rozier will be placed unpaid on leave, and the NBA will not grant the Heat or the Trail Blazers any leeway in adjusting their salary cap restrictions.
Rozier was supposed to receive the first installment of his $26.6 million salary that week, but this amount, along with any future salary he is due to receive, is currently being withheld due to the ongoing federal investigation. The withholding period will depend on the final outcome of the investigation.
Following this statement, the NBA was criticized by the NBA Players Association (NBPA).
The NBPA argued that while all legal procedures must be respected, based on the presumption of innocence, the NBA should not immediately suspend Rozier without trial until he is convicted, and will pursue legal action against this decision.
A federal court ruled that the NBA's actions were illegal and that Rozier should receive his full salary, but the league reportedly did not follow the ruling.
The Heat currently have a record of 42 wins and 39 losses, ranking tenth in the Eastern Conference, with one game remaining in the season.
According to a follow-up report from ESPN, they will use the roster opening after waiving Rozier to convert two-way contract guard Jahmir Young to a regular contract player.
