Wizards GM: Despite poor record, Keefe will continue as head coach next season

Washington Wizards general manager Will Dawkins said Thursday that he expects Brian Keefe to continue as head coach next season.
Since Keith Moody was promoted from assistant coach to head coach in May 2024, the Wizards have only managed a 43-160 record in the regular season. Their performance this season has been consistently poor, ultimately finishing the regular season with a bottom-of-the-table record in the Eastern Conference (17-65).
Nevertheless, Dawkins showed absolute confidence in Keeve. When asked about Keeve's future, he stated bluntly: "I expect Brian Keeve to remain in his position."
From the Wizards' perspective, Keeve has essentially implemented the management's rebuilding-centric competitive strategy this season. The poor record actually helped the Wizards secure at least the fifth overall pick in the lottery, without having to give the New York Knicks their top-eight protected first-round pick in 2026.
More importantly, the Wizards are very satisfied with Keeve's ability to develop young players: under his guidance, many rookies, including Alex Sal, Kaysean George, Trae Johnson, Will Riley, and Jameer Watkins, have made significant progress this season. His high level of cooperation with management is also a key factor in his continued tenure as head coach.
Dawkins concluded by saying that Keeve's task next season will be even more challenging: "Everything is constantly changing. We are always committed to advancing and improving the team's foundation. His challenges are mainly reflected at the tactical level: first, how to maximize the strengths of the players and let them each perform their roles to achieve success; second, to shift the team's mindset from focusing on individual development and statistics to pursuing team success."
"This may be the biggest challenge he has faced since taking office, but I have full confidence in him and the team."
