The Ukrainian Football Federation (UAF) officially announced on Wednesday that 51-year-old Sergei Rybrov will no longer serve as the national team coach, effective immediately. The official statement also confirmed that he will continue to fulfill his duties as the Ukrainian Football Federation's vice president and a member of the executive committee.
Regarding this adjustment, Andriy Shevchenko, president of the Ukrainian Football Federation, commented: "We thank Sergei Stanislavovich Rybrov for his work and contributions to developing young players. Today, we need to move forward and lay the foundation for the future of the national team by making new decisions."
Rebrov said, "Thank you to the whole team and the fans for their support along the way. It has been a tough journey with both wins and losses, but the Ukrainian people have always supported the national team. I will always remember these moments of unity and be grateful for them. I also want to thank the Ukrainian Football Federation for its continued support, encouragement and cooperation."
Rybrov played as a striker during his playing career, and played for several teams including Shakhtar Donetsk, Dynamo Kyiv, Tottenham Hotspur, Fenerbahce, West Ham United, and Rubin Kazan. He also made 75 appearances for the Ukrainian national team, scoring 15 goals and providing 2 assists.
After retiring in 2009, Rebrov chose to transition into coaching. He coached Dynamo Kyiv, Nacional Jeddah, Ferencváros, and Al Ain, leading them to two Ukrainian Premier League titles, two Ukrainian Cup titles, one Ukrainian Super Cup title, three Hungarian First Division titles, one UAE League title, and one UAE League Cup title.
In June 2023, Rybrov officially succeeded Oleksandr Petrakov as the head coach of Ukraine. He has achieved a record of 16 wins, 8 draws, and 10 losses in international competitions to date, leading the team to the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup European qualifying playoffs. Unfortunately, Ukraine lost 1-3 to Sweden in the semi-finals, ultimately failing to qualify for the 2026 USA-Mexico World Cup.
