League of Legends Hextech Chests Return, But With Major Changes

Riot Games has been embroiled in controversy recently over its new Sanctum card spawn system, which introduced "exalted" skins with gambling-like mechanics, becoming one of a series of controversial changes the company has made in recent years that have damaged its reputation.

Not long ago, Riot announced the cancellation of the "Hextech Treasure Box" system for obtaining skins for free. This system was once a symbol of player loyalty, giving them the opportunity to unlock skins for free through game performance. However, Riot stated in the developer log at the time that the system caused most players to unlock a large number of skins, which was considered "an unsustainable business model in the long run."

The removal of the Hextech chest sparked a community-wide outcry. Content creators discussed the matter, memes were swirling, and even every official Riot announcement was met with strong opposition from players. Ultimately, under continued public pressure, Riot decided to restore the Hextech chest, but this time the return was different from the original.

In the latest developer log, Riot announced that Hextech chests will no longer be linked to the "hero proficiency system", but will be integrated into the seasonal Battle Pass system. This means that players no longer need to spend a lot of time on a specific hero or reach a specific score, but can unlock chests through the Battle Pass progress, so that those who like random modes or play different heroes extensively can also benefit.

In the new Battle Pass system, there are 8 Hextech chests distributed in 50 levels, and the unlocking points are: Battle Pass Level 3, 15, 20, 23, 31, 36, 42, 45

Each Hextech chest will come with a key to ensure that players can continue to enjoy the fun of "random skin acquisition". Of course, in order to accommodate these chests, Riot has also adjusted the battle pass reward structure and modified some seasonal limited skins.

Rewards replaced by Hextech Chests :

  • Random Icons

  • Seasonal Hero Skin Emotes

  • Free Seasonal Hero Skins

  • Mysterious Icon

  • Seasonal Hero Skins + Borders

  • 4000 Blue Essence

  • Mysterious Expression

  • Mystical epic skin or below

This change means that some free hero skins originally included in the seasonal battle pass have been removed, but players will be able to obtain more Hextech chests, which will increase the chances of getting skins for free overall.
