According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the three potential destinations for Nets forward Cameron Johnson before the trade deadline are the Indiana Pacers, Memphis Grizzlies and Sacramento Kings.
Cameron Johnson, 28, was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the 11th pick in the first round in 2019 and was subsequently traded to the Phoenix Suns. In February 2023, he was sent to the Brooklyn Nets by the Suns in exchange for Kevin Durant.
So far this season, Cameron Johnson has played 32 times for the Nets, averaging 19.5 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. Currently, many teams have expressed interest in him, including the Pacers, Grizzlies, Kings, Lakers, Warriors, Thunder, Nuggets and Heat.
Marc Stein made it clear that the Grizzlies were considered one of the potential trade destinations for Cameron Johnson. However, their enthusiasm for Cameron Johnson may have faded after the Nets chose to trade Dorian Finney-Smith to the Lakers.
If the Grizzlies' interest in Cameron Johnson remains undiminished, they may include former Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart in a trade package. According to ClutchPoints reporter Brett Siegel, the Grizzlies have rejected trade offers for Smart and plan to send him to Brooklyn.
Mark Stein went on to point out that the Pacers are also one of the teams interested in Cameron Johnson. They are trying to improve the team's defensive performance next season by introducing Johnson, and may use Aaron Nesmith and Obi Toppin as bargaining chips in the trade.
Meanwhile, the Kings have discussed a potential trade with the Nets, but according to Marc Stein, they have not yet included rookie guard Devin Carter in the negotiations.
Mark Stein also mentioned that the Nets hope to acquire multiple first-round draft picks or young players by trading Cameron Johnson, but there are doubts about whether this goal can be achieved. Cameron Johnson's contract this season is $22.5 million, including bonuses up to $27 million. He currently has a three-year contract with a total value of $65.54 million.
