Everton announced on its official website on Monday that the club's English Director of Football Kevin Thelwell will step down after the end of this season when his contract expires.
According to Everton's official statement, despite his upcoming departure, Thelwell will temporarily stay with the club to help CEO Colin Chong, who will also step down at the end of this season, complete the handover with new CEO Angus Kinnear.
After the news of his impending resignation was released, Thelwell said through Everton's official website: "I am very proud of what we have achieved in the most challenging circumstances over the past three years, and I believe that I will leave the club in a much stronger position than when I joined in 2022."
"It has been a privilege to work for Everton and I would like to thank the players, staff and of course the fans for their excellent support during my tenure. I also look forward to the club's progress on and off the pitch under the leadership of the Friedkin Group in the coming years."
About Kevin Thelwell
Thelwell, 51, was born on October 27, 1973 in Oswestry, England. As a child, he played for the Crewe Alexandra youth academy and the Shrewsbury Town youth academy, but was released.
Later, Thelwell played for several non-league clubs in England, but later chose to retire early because he felt that his career was not going well.
After retiring, Thelwell participated in the coaching course of the Welsh Football Association. After graduation, he started working for the Welsh Football Association in 1998. At the age of 25 at the time, Thelwell became the youngest coach in the history of the Welsh Football Association to obtain have his UEFA Pro License.
In 2002, Thelwell was promoted to Director of the Welsh Football Association Youth Coaching Program and actively participated in promoting UEFA's wider recognition of this program.
In the summer of 2004, Thelwell was appointed Preston's Head of Youth Development, during which he helped the club win the Football League National Youth Alliance Cup.
The following summer, he was appointed as the head coach of Derby County'ss U18 team.
In April 2008, Thelwell was appointed as the head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers' U18s team, and 8 years later he was promoted as Wolves' Sporting Director.
In February 2020, Thelwell was invited by former Manchester United interim head coach Ralf Rangnick to be New York Red Bulls Sporting Director.
In February 2022, Thelwell returned to the UK as Everton's Director of Football.
Under his management, the Toffees managed to stay in the Premier League despite being deducted points for breaching the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), poor supervision by former chairman Farhad Moshiri, and EU sanctions against former owner, Russian businessman Alisher Usmanov, for being pro-Putin government.
