Mexico's national team had just won the CONCACAF Nations League final against Panama, winning the tournament for the first time. However, the 23-man squad selected by coach Javier Aguirre did not include key players such as Henry Martín, Eric Sanchez and Jorge Sanchez.
Jorge Sanchez, who plays for Cruz Azul, expressed his disappointment about being eliminated.
"It's a bit bitter because I could have been part of that championship team," Sanchez said. "After all, I was an important member of the team that reached the final. I played, thank God I scored, and the team played very well. I really thought I would be on the roster."
Although he couldn't hide his regret, Sanchez still said that he respected the coaching staff's decision and would not hold any grudges.
"I really thought I would be called up, but now it's my turn to be here to support my teammates. I have no problem with anyone. I just hope that the national team can do well and win more titles with or without me. They finally won the championship, and I am really happy too."
Sanchez was very surprised that he was not selected in the 23-man squad. He has been in good form since returning to the Mexican arena. This season, he played 10 games for Cruz Azul, including 8 starts, and scored 1 goal, showing a stable performance.
Sanchez said: "To be honest, I was really surprised that I was not called up. It was a big blow to me because I did really well and the data was there. Our team as a whole is also improving and everything is moving in a good direction. I was really shocked by the decision. But in the end, the decision was made by the 'Basque' (Aguirre's nickname). He decided not to take me."
After winning the Nations League, Aguirre is preparing for this summer's Gold Cup, where Mexico will play as the defending champions. Before this Gold Cup, the national team will also play two warm-up matches in the United States, against Switzerland on June 7 and Turkey on June 10.
