Heidenheim issued a statement on Friday confirming that Jan Schopner has completed the contract extension. The new contract will extend the original contract by three years until June 30, 2028.
Jan Schopner, 25, came from the youth training of Fell and moved to Heidenheim on a free transfer in August 2020. He mainly played as a central midfielder and defensive midfielder in Heidenheim. So far, he has made 133 appearances, scored 7 goals and provided 5 assists.
"Schopner's growth over the past five years has been amazing," explained Heidenheim CEO Holger Sonnval after the signing. "He joined from Ver as a young regional league player when we were in the 2. Bundesliga and became a key player in our promotion to the Bundesliga."
Holger Sandval also believes that Schopner's contract extension will help Heidenheim avoid relegation this season: "Schopner has taken his performance in the Bundesliga to the next level and has become an indispensable member of our lineup. Both on and off the pitch, his enterprising spirit and professional attitude are a perfect fit for the Heidenheim club. Therefore, we are very happy that Schopner has chosen to renew his contract. His decision sets an important benchmark for us in our relegation battle."
Heidenheim is currently ranked third from the bottom in the Bundesliga standings, with a record of 3 wins, 1 draw, 11 losses and 10 points.
Schopner said afterwards: "Four and a half years ago, as a young player, I had the opportunity to prove myself in the Bundesliga. For this, I am very grateful. Our club has made significant progress since then, successfully promoted to the Bundesliga and qualified for European competitions, which I am very proud of."
"With the Bundesliga restarting soon, I think the renewal is a positive sign for the team. I firmly believe that as a club we will be able to avoid relegation!"
