Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has explained why Noni Maduekai was not included in the Chelsea squad for the FA Cup clash with Morecambe.
Madueke's absence did not affect Chelsea's comfortable 5-0 win over Morecambe in the FA Cup on Saturday, but the England international's absence still caught the eye. Madueke played just four minutes in Chelsea's 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace in the Premier League earlier this week, and Maresca said the 22-year-old was unable to play against the League Two side due to illness.
There was confusion as to why Madueke missed the game at Stamford Bridge, but the Chelsea manager did not elaborate, responding simply: "He did not complete his training session yesterday. He was unwell."
Madueke has previously been criticised by his head coach for his work ethic and effort in matches and training. Maresca admitted that he believes the former PSV winger still has more potential to tap and hopes to fully tap his abilities in matches. Despite this, Madueke has already had 10 direct involvements in goals in 22 games this season in all competitions.
There is no news on when Madueke will return, but the Chelsea manager is hopeful that more players will be available for Tuesday's Premier League home game against Bournemouth.
