Alan Shearer says there is "no doubt" Erling Haaland will break his Premier League goalscoring record after the midfielder signed a new 10-year contract with Manchester City.
On Friday, Manchester City announced that they had signed a staggering new nine-and-a-half-year contract with Haaland. Despite City's poor performance in the first half of the season, which almost ended their hopes of defending the Premier League title, the striker still promised to play for Manchester City for a long time. Shearer believes that if Haaland fulfills this contract, his record of 260 Premier League goals will definitely be broken. So far, Haaland has scored 79 goals in 87 Premier League games for Manchester City, with amazing efficiency.
Shearer, who has transformed from a player to a commentator, has seen his record challenged many times. Previously, Wayne Rooney and Harry Kane were both considered likely to surpass him, but ultimately failed to do so. Kane, who is currently ranked second, is 47 goals away. If he returns to the Premier League, he may still be able to continue chasing the record. Haaland obviously has more potential to achieve this goal. However, if the Norwegian striker wants to get close to Shearer's record, he will need to maintain his current goal efficiency for about five more seasons.
Shearer told BBC Sport: "If he had played that long, there's no doubt he would have broken the record. "My record will be broken one day, maybe by Harry Kane or Mohamed Salah. There have been many great strikers before I was born who have set incredible records. I'm sure mine will be broken."
It is speculated that Haaland signed the new contract because he believed Manchester City could avoid serious sanctions from the Premier League over its allegations of financial irregularities. Regardless of the final outcome, Haaland's contract extension is undoubtedly a huge positive for Manchester City's long-term future. It was previously believed that Haaland might choose to move to other European teams during his peak period, but now he has made it clear that he will continue to stay at the Etihad Stadium, stabilizing the core of the club's lineup.
