West Ham United winger Maxwell Cornet joins Genoa on loan with no buyout clause

Serie A club Genoa announced on Monday that it has loaned West Ham United winger Maxwell Cornet until the end of the 2024/25 season. According to the current agreement, there should be no buyout clause in Cornet's loan contract.

According to official news, Cornet will wear the No. 70 jersey in Genoa.

Maxwell Cornet, 28, grew up in the Metz youth training and made his professional debut for the first team in French Ligue 3 on August 31, 2012. He then played for Lyon in Ligue 1 and Burnley in the Premier League, and joined West Ham United for 20.7 million euros in August 2022.

Cornet has played 37 times for West Ham United, scoring 1 goal and providing 6 assists, winning the UEFA Europa League in the 2023/24 season with the team. He has played for Southampton on loan since August last year, but has only made 4 appearances so far and has not contributed any goals or assists.

Due to lack of playing opportunities, Cornet was recalled from the Saints by West Ham United six months in advance this week. Despite this, Southampton still needs to pay the player's salary in full according to the agreement.

Cornet was once linked with Lens, but he would rather get more playing time under Genoa coach Patrick Vieira. The Ivorian is also seen as a possible successor to Italy's 34-year-old center forward Mario Balotelli, who has only played six games as a substitute since joining Genoa in October last year.
