Eintracht Frankfurt officially announced on Tuesday that Syrian midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud will leave the club on a free transfer this summer when his contract expires. According to Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, several clubs have already added him to their transfer targets.
Along with announcing the decision, Eintracht Frankfurt also expressed their gratitude and best wishes to Dahoud. In a statement, Frankfurt's sporting director, Timo Hardon, said: "Mo has always put the team first and demonstrated exemplary professionalism. We thank him for his contributions over the past two seasons and wish him all the best in the future, both on and off the pitch."
The 30-year-old Dahoud came through the youth academy of Borussia Mönchengladbach and made his professional debut on August 27, 2014, in a Europa League play-off. He subsequently played for Borussia Dortmund, Brighton and Stuttgart, winning the German Cup and the German Super Cup with Dortmund.
Dahoud joined Eintracht Frankfurt on a free transfer. He has been a substitute for Frankfurt for most of the time, making only 35 appearances so far, scoring 3 goals and providing 3 assists.
For Eintracht Frankfurt, this parting of ways was based on a combination of sporting and financial considerations. On the one hand, Dahoud's annual salary of 2.5 million euros did not match his actual performance; on the other hand, Frankfurt coach Albert Riera preferred to give more playing time to young players such as Hugo Larsson, Fares Chaibi, Ritsu Doan, and Oscar Hoylen in midfield.
