Rangers announced on its official website on Monday that the club's Belgian head coach Philippe Clement has been sacked.
According to Rangers' official statement the club's former legendary Scotland international midfielder Barry Ferguson will coach the club as an interim manager until the end of this season.
Although it is rumoured that its former head coach, former Liverpool and England legendary captain Steven Gerrard will be one of the most popular candidates for the club's new head coach position, Gerrard is currently waiting for the Saudi and British governments to settle his outstanding tax issues after leaving Al-Ettifaq, thus he will not be able to take over in the near future.
Rangers did not explain the main reason for Clement's sacking in the official statement, but The Athletic did gave a reason for it.
According to The Athletic, although Clement still has the support of the club's CEO Patrick Stewart, Clement's position as head coach has become a point to no return as the club shockingly lost to Scottish Championship club Queen's Park match in the Scottish Cup match, and then shockingly lost to St. Mirren.
It is worth mentioning that this is the first time that Rangers have lost to a club in a lower league level than themselves at home in the club's history.
In fact, since December 2024, calls for Clement to be sacked have already been very high.
About Philippe Clement
Clement, 50, was born in Antwerp, Belgium on March 22, 1974. He is 1.91 meters tall. He primarily played as a center back during his playing career and can also play as a defensive midfielder. He is a legendary former Belgium international player at Club Brugge.
Clement has previously coached Genk and his former club Club Brugge, during which he won the Jupiler Pro League with each of the clubs.
In January 2022, Clement was appointed as the head coach of Monaco, but was sacked the following summer due to being eliminated in the cup competitions.
In October 2023, Clement was appointed as the head coach of Rangers.
During his one-and-a-half year spell as Rangers head coach, Clement coached the Scottish Premiership giants in 86 games across all competitions, achieving 55 wins, 16 draws, and 15 losses, with a win percentage of 63.95%, and won the Scottish League Cup once with the club.
