Former Rapid Vienna Dutch striker Ferdy Druijf has finally broken his silence and refuted the fake news which Malaysian online media outlet FR FUTURE TALENTS had falsely claimed that he had been naturalized as the country's national team player in an interview with ESPN Netherlands on Wednesday.
Druijf said in the interview that he and his family had no idea and were puzzled by the claim of FR FUTURE TALENTS, which alleged that his grandmother was of Malaysian mixed race. He even threatened that he could provide the identification documents he carried with him to the hospital for DNA testing to prove whether he really had Malaysian ancestry.
Druijf refuted that: "Yes, everything that happened about this incident is really crazy. Once upon a time, there was an Instagram account (FR FUTURE TALENTS) which suddenly fabricated this story, and then I saw almost everyone was reposting this news like crazy.
"Because of this, my personal Instagram account suddenly gained 10,000 new Malaysian fans, but I didn't know what was going on at the time. This whole thing is too crazy."
"They claim that my grandmother is a Malaysian mixed-race, with the country's ancestry, but how much of this is true?! Maybe it seems that they know more than me."
"Even my parents themselves have no idea that there is such a thing. It seems that I may need to do a DNA test or related experiments to verify this."
"I can say with certainty that I am now preparing to take a DNA test. I thought, in this case, why not give it a try and see what the results will be? ! !"
"If the test results really verify that I have Malaysian ancestry, then I naturally cannot rule out the possibility of being naturalized."
After Druijf's interview program was broadcasted, many Malaysian fans of all ethnic groups immediately flocked to the official X (Twitter) account of FR FUTURE TALENTS, severely criticizing the online media outlet for once again sensationalizing and fooling the people of the country with fake news.
However, an editor of FR FUTURE TALENTS tried defending themselves that they "never had posted an article which confirmed that the Dutch player had claimed to have Malaysian ancestry and had been naturalized was Druijf himself".
But the fans were not to be outdone, and soon produced screenshots of the online media outlet and the editor who had posted this fake news on February 22, 2024 and 2025. Since then, FR FUTURE TALENTS and the editor have once again avoid being condemned.
It is worth mentioning that Druijf is the third person who had slapped FR FUTURE TALENTS in the face for falsely claiming to be a player who have Malaysian ancestry.
There is alreaady a precedent
Previously, Manchester United's English youngster Ethan Wheatley was also falsely claimed by the online media that his grandmother was born in Selangor, Malaysia, and he often flew back to the country with his family for vacation when he was a child.
In the end, this news was eventually denied by the Manchester United youngster himself through an interview with Bernama, and he clarified that he had never said such a thing.
Similarly, Burnley's English captain Josh Brownhill was also one of the players who was rumoured to have Malaysian ancestry by FR FUTURE TALENTS, and the "story" used by them to spread the rumour was even more exaggerated.
In April 2024, FR FUTURE TALENTS suddenly posted a post falsely claiming that the online media outlet had received a private message from Josh Brownhill, which claimed that he was actually born in Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia, and often returned to Miri with his family to visit his grandmother who still lived there.
In the private message, this "Brownhill" also revealed that “Although I am an English footballer who dreams of playing in the Premier League, Malaysia will always have a special place in my heart. ”
As soon as this article was published, it was widely reported by Malaysian media in various languages, but at the time only our website and some fans questioned its credibility.
In fact, many editors of our website had already questioned its credibility at the time. The interview excerpt and life story of Brownhill referred to by FR FUTURE TALENTS actually came from the interview clip of former Scottish legendary international midfielder Sean Maloney, who was really born in Miri, when he accepted Malaysian satellite TV station ASTRO's interview in 2014.
Later, Brownhill himself eventually published an statement at the end of December 2024 to refute that he had said these words.
It was the same method used by another inferior online media outlet
In addition, our website had actually already exposed in April 2024 for the first time that the method which FR FUTURE TALENTS had used to kept fabricating fake news claiming that a certain player had Malaysian ancestry, was exactly the same as the Chinese ancestry research organization Chinese Roots.
This so-called "roots searching" organization for overseas Chinese, which was established by its Associate Director, Jallo Tang, was founded when there were still high levels of discussion about Chinese Super League in the international footballing world a few years ago, and when players such as Tyias Browning, Nico Yennaris, John Hou Sæter, and Roberto Siucho were naturalized as Chinese national team players, suddenly transformed and continuously "revealed" that many other players who were playing in the Europe's top five leagues and had never set foot in the Chinese Super League also had Chinese ancestry.
This method is exactly the same as the one used by FR FUTURE TALENTS now. Among these many players, the ones that fans questioned the most were Cardiff City's Wales international striker Kiefer Moore and Liverpool captain, Netherlands international center back Virgil van Dijk.
During the 2020 European Championships, after Moore scored, falsely claimed through the Chinese online media outlet Titan Sports that as a fourth-generation Chinese, Moore had a chance to be naturalized as a Chinese national team player and falsely claimed that his great-grandfather was a sailor from Guangzhou, China, and had "immigrated to Liverpool" before the founding of the People's Republic of China. However, Moore actually has Italian ancestry.
Not only that, Jallo Tang also used the fact that Suriname has many Chinese immigrants to lie about the life experience of Dutch international defender Virgil van Dijk.
At the time, this "senior archaeologist" lied that the Liverpool captain's mother was named Chin Fo Sieeuw and that she was born in a Chinese family in Guangdong in 1810. You can tell how illogical this is just by looking at it.
