The Milwaukee Bucks officially announced on Tuesday that Damian Lillard will be out indefinitely due to deep vein thrombosis in his right calf.
"Damian's health is our top priority," Bucks general manager Jon Horst said. "We will fully support him and ensure his safe return following a rigorous weekly evaluation schedule. Doctors have advised that his condition is unlikely to recur. We are fortunate that this issue was identified and quickly treated with medication to promote recovery."
The Bucks further stated that Lillard is taking blood thinning drugs to stabilize the deep blood clots and will continue to undergo regular checkups. According to TA Bucks reporter Eric Nehm, the treatment is now showing initial results.
Lillard, 34, plays as a shooting guard and was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers with the sixth pick in the first round in 2012. After playing for the Trail Blazers for 11 years, he switched to the Bucks and averaged 24.3 points, 4.4 rebounds, 7.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game in his first season.
So far this season, Lillard has played 58 games for the Bucks, averaging 24.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, 7.1 assists and 1.21 steals per game, with a shooting percentage of 44.8% and a three-point shooting percentage of 37.6%. He also helped the Bucks win an NBA Cup as a main player and once led the team to the top of the Eastern Conference.
For the Bucks, Lillard's injury is a big blow. With only 11 games left in the regular season, the Bucks without Lillard have dropped to 40 wins and 31 losses, ranking fifth in the Eastern Conference.
Lillard also expressed his helplessness about the injury through a spokesperson: "Regrettably, there are some situations that I can't control. Consistent with the Bucks' medical team, our top priority is to ensure my health and safety. I love basketball, but it is equally important to be with my children and family. I am grateful that the Bucks took quick action and they have been supportive and proactive throughout the process. I look forward to returning from injury as soon as possible and continuing my career."
