Official: Newcastle United extends contract with 33-year-old centre-back Fabian Scher until June 2026

Newcastle United announced on Thursday that Fabian Scherr's contract will be extended from June this year to June 30, 2026.

The 33-year-old Fabian Scher mainly plays as a central defender and made his professional debut for his parent club Weir in November 2009. He then played for Basel, Hoffenheim and Deportivo La Coruna, and transferred to Newcastle United for 4 million euros in 2018.

To date, Sher has made 221 appearances for Newcastle United, scoring 19 goals and providing 8 assists. He also played as a key player in the team's win of this year's English League Cup. He is also one of the longest-serving active players in Newcastle United.

After completing the contract extension, Sher said: "I am very happy to continue to stay in Newcastle. Newcastle United has had a very good few weeks after winning the English League Cup. I am also very happy to renew my contract with this excellent club."

"This is my seventh season at Newcastle. Everyone knows how happy I am at the club and how comfortable I am in the city, so I'm delighted to be continuing."

Scher concluded: "The key now is to look to the future and go all out to finish the season in the strongest condition." Newcastle United currently ranks sixth in the Premier League with 15 wins, 5 draws and 9 losses, with 50 points, 7 points behind the top four with one game less.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe added: "Fabian has been outstanding during my time in charge. Not only has he performed well on the pitch, but he has also shown a great attitude within the team."

"He has been one of the key players at the club so far this season. He will continue to be a key player for us in the future, helping the team to strive for the highest possible league position."

Newcastle United sporting director Paul Mitchell said: "We are delighted to have renewed Fabian's contract. He has played an important role in the club's development in recent years and will continue to play a key role on and off the pitch."

“We are strategically planning for the sustainability and development of the team and will continue to work together to ensure the team is in the best possible shape in the short and long term to lay the foundation for success.”
