Germany center back Mats Hummels released a video on Friday announcing that he will retire at the end of this season.
"I have mixed feelings at this moment," he said. "This is the moment that no player can avoid. After 18 years of giving me so many gifts, I will end my professional career this summer."
Mats Hummels, 36, is a product of Bayern Munich's youth training and made his debut for the first team in the German League Cup on August 2, 2006. He played for Bayern Munich for five seasons at different stages of his career, during which he made 118 appearances, scored 8 goals and assisted 7 times, and won four Bundesliga titles, two German Cup titles, three German Super Cup titles and one German League Cup title with the team.
Hummels also played for Dortmund for 14 seasons, contributing 38 goals and 23 assists in 508 games, helping the team win 2 Bundesliga titles, 2 German Cup titles and 3 German Super Cup titles. He moved to Roma last September and has only played 18 times so far, scoring 1 goal.
As for the national team, Hummels has represented Germany since May 2010, and has played 78 times so far, scoring 5 goals and providing 7 assists. He has participated in 2 World Cups (2014, 2018) and 3 European Championships (2012, 2016, 2020), and won the World Cup in 2014 as a main player.
