On the evening of May 12, local time, the 2025 NBA draft lottery ceremony was held at the McCormick Center in Chicago. In the end, the Dallas Mavericks unexpectedly won the No. 1 pick with a probability of 1.8%, becoming the team with the fourth lowest probability of winning the No. 1 pick in NBA history.
"I'm happy for the fans," said Mavericks CEO Rick Welts, clutching an envelope with the number 1 on it. "I arrived in Dallas on January 1. On February 1, we were already making waves online. I was blown away by the deep emotional connection between the fans and the team."
He added: "As far as the results go, I can't imagine a happier day for Mavericks fans than today. I can't wait to get back to Dallas."
If nothing unexpected happens, the Mavericks will select Duke University forward Cooper Flagg with the first pick. Flagg, who is only 18 years old, is over 2 meters tall and weighs 107 kilograms. This season, he averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game, with a shooting percentage of 48.1%, a three-point shooting percentage of 38.5%, and a free throw shooting percentage of 84%. Under his leadership, Duke University not only won the ACC division championship, but also successfully advanced to the NCAA semifinals in March Madness.
Following the Mavericks, the San Antonio Spurs and the Philadelphia 76ers won the second and third picks respectively. The Charlotte Hornets, Utah Jazz, Washington Wizards, New Orleans Pelicans, Brooklyn Nets, Toronto Raptors, Houston Rockets (the pick came from the Suns), Portland Trail Blazers, Chicago Bulls, Atlanta Hawks (the pick came from the Kings) and Spurs (the pick came from the Hawks) won the 4th to 14th picks, as follows:
