Premier League club Manchester United has released a statement announcing that former goalkeeper David Gaskell has died at the age of 84.
In a tribute to Gaskell's family, it was written: "David loved his beloved wife and shared 68 wonderful years of marriage with her. He was a proud father of three daughters and a loving grandfather of grandchildren. His family was his greatest joy and his legacy will live on through them."
"During these weeks of illness, David was surrounded by the love and support of the many friends he made throughout his life. He will be deeply missed by these friends. David Gaskell leaves behind not only a sporting legacy, but also a lasting example of kindness, dedication and humility. He will be deeply missed and forever engraved in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him."
On October 24, 1956, Gaskell became the youngest starting player in Manchester United's history. At that time, Gaskell was just a staff member of Manchester United's grounds. After finishing his work, he went to watch the Charity Shield match between Manchester United and Manchester City.
It happened that the starting goalkeeper was forced to leave the field due to injury. Coach Bert Whalley saw Gaskell and quickly asked him to prepare his equipment, even borrowing a pair of spare shoes from his teammates, and then sent Gaskell onto the field.
Surprisingly, Gaskell performed well in the game, keeping a clean sheet and helping Manchester United win 1-0. The day after the game, Gaskell was promoted to the first team. In the next 11 seasons, Gaskell spent the golden years of his career at Manchester United.
Although the competition for the goalkeeper position at Manchester United was fierce, Gaskell was not afraid of any challenge. As long as the coach needed Gaskell, he could always play steadily in every game. Gaskell left Manchester United in 1969 and then played for many clubs until the end of his career in 1974.
