The Brooklyn Nets held a grand retirement ceremony for Vince Carter's No. 15 jersey. Carter lamented that this was an honor that he and his family would cherish forever.
The 48-year-old Carter joined the Brooklyn Nets in 2004 and played in the team for more than four seasons, playing 374 games. Carter set a single-season scoring record for the Brooklyn Nets and ranked third in team history with 8,834 points.
When Carter was a freshman in high school, the No. 6, No. 12 and No. 23 jerseys he wanted were all taken. However, Carter's mother gave him advice, asking him to find a new number and make it famous. Carter followed his mother's advice, and now it has become a reality.
Carter's No. 15 jersey was officially retired during the halftime of the game between the Brooklyn Nets and the Miami Heat. The ceremony was attended by Carter's family, former Brooklyn Nets teammates, former coach Lawrence Frank, the team president, and legendary players whose numbers had been retired, witnessing Carter becoming the seventh player to be retired by the Brooklyn Nets.
At the ceremony, Carter said: "This is an honor that my family and I will always cherish. It is incredible to be the seventh number retired. It is an honor to be with you legends. The No. 15 jersey will be hung high. This is our common achievement."
Although Carter was traded to the Orlando Magic in 2009 and has played for eight NBA teams since then, he still believes that his time with the Brooklyn Nets was the most memorable in his career. Carter said: "We enjoyed it, but we also knew when to focus."
"We have a great relationship with each other and really play for each other, which makes it more fun. I try to do my job and have fun doing it."
