Remove Hextech Chests? League of Legends Development Team: To ensure the long-term development of the game

The League of Legends development team recently released a video explaining the considerations for removing Hextech chests. They emphasized that this move is aimed at reducing the amount of free skins available and ensuring the sustainability of the business model.
The first theme season of League of Legends in 2025, "Welcome to Noxus", has been launched for more than a month, and the game has also ushered in a number of major changes. Among them, the most controversial change is that Hextech treasure chest rewards will no longer be issued, which greatly reduces the ways for players to obtain hero appearances for free.
In response to players' dissatisfaction, Andre van Roon, head of the League of Legends studio, and Paul Beleza, executive producer, recently released a video to respond. Andre van Roon made it clear that as a free game, League of Legends mainly relies on skin sales to support long-term investments such as game development, event operations, and version balance. However, despite the relatively stable player base, the sustainability of game revenue still faces challenges.
Paul Belleza went on to add that the Hextech chests were originally designed to reward players for their time in the game by providing them with the opportunity to obtain skins for free. However, as a large number of players obtained skins through chests, the appeal of direct purchases gradually decreased. Belleza believes that this is not conducive to the long-term development of the game.
Based on the above considerations, Riot Games decided to adjust the reward system. Beleza said that the team has increased the annual skin production while reducing the number of ways to obtain free skins, and introduced more high-end decorations. Van Roon emphasized that this move is not simply to pursue profits, but to ensure the long-term development of the game. The team will continue to pay attention to player feedback and provide more relevant information in the future.
