FC Barcelona confirmed today that 18-year-old Spanish international striker Lamin Yamal will miss the remainder of the season due to a left hamstring injury.
However, the Barcelona medical team is optimistic that Yamal will recover in time and represent the Spanish national team in the upcoming World Cup.
In Barcelona's 1-0 victory over Celta Vigo in La Liga, Yamal scored a penalty in the 40th minute to give his team the lead. However, shortly after scoring, he signaled for a substitution to the bench, then collapsed in pain, clutching his left hamstring. He was eventually helped off the pitch by medical personnel.
Barcelona's subsequent injury report clarified that Yamal would undergo conservative treatment. While this meant his club season was prematurely ended, the club confirmed he was expected to return in time for the World Cup.
Faced with the sudden injury, Yamar expressed his feelings on his personal social media: "This injury prevented me from playing when I most wanted to, and the pain is indescribable. It hurts me to not be able to fight alongside my teammates, but I firmly believe that they will give their all in every game."
“Even off the court, I will fully support the team. This is not the end, just a pause. I will return stronger.”
Currently, Barcelona, the defending La Liga champions, are in a crucial period of the league title race. The team leads the standings by 9 points and will host their arch-rivals Real Madrid on May 10.
