Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards was fined $35,000 by the NBA for failing to leave the court in time and throwing a basketball into the stands, bringing the All-Star's total fines for this season to $320,000.
So far this season, Edwards has been fined six times by the league for violations, most of which were for using inappropriate language in post-game interviews. This time, his behavior occurred in the Timberwolves' game against the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday, when he was ejected for accumulating two technical fouls. This was also his 16th technical foul this season. According to league regulations, he was automatically suspended for one game, which was executed in the Timberwolves' game against the Utah Jazz on Friday.
James Williams, the head referee of the game, explained after the game that Edwards' second technical foul was because he used inappropriate words to the referee. At that time, when he broke through, he thought that Lakers guard Gabe Vincent should be called for a blocking foul, but the referee did not make a penalty, which made him lose control of his emotions.
It is worth noting that earlier in the game, Edwards had received a technical foul for pushing and shoving with Lakers forward Jared Vanderbilt.
Although Edwards publicly promised last month that he would not receive technical fouls again, the reality is that he still finds it difficult to control his emotions. According to league regulations, for every two technical fouls he accumulates, his suspension will increase by one additional game.
Timberwolves coach Chris Finch said of Edwards' behavior after the game: "He knows he needs to improve. I hope this incident has made him realize the seriousness of the problem and learn a lesson in the future."
