Official: Marseille and 29-year-old defender Amir Murillo extend contract until 2028

Marseille issued a statement on Friday, announcing that it has renewed its contract with Amir Murillo for two years. Amir Murillo's contract with Marseille was originally scheduled to last until 2026, and has now been extended to June 30, 2028.

Amir Murillo, 29, is from Panama and made his debut from the Panamanian San Francisco club in August 2015. He then played for New York Red Bulls, Royal Anderlecht and other teams until he joined Marseille for 2.5 million euros in August 2023.

So far, Murillo has played 50 times for Marseille, scoring 4 goals and providing 4 assists. He mainly plays as a central defender and right back in Marseille and is regarded as an indispensable defensive pillar in Roberto De Zerbi's tactical system.

That's why the news of Murillo's absence due to a hamstring injury bothered De Zerbi, who said after Murillo signed: "I'm happy for his renewal, he deserves a new contract. He's been doing very well this season. His absence is a problem."

De Zerbi went on to add: "Pol Lirola is similar but lacks the quality to play in that role. Valentin Longhi could also take Murillo's place but he is a midfielder after all. The same is true for Geoffrey Kondogbia. Luiz Felipe Ramos mainly plays as a central defender in a back four. We will monitor the games he is absent."
