Osmajic accused of racist comments, but player denies it

Hannibal Mejbri reported to match officials that he was subjected to "disgusting abuse" during Burnley's 0-0 draw with Preston. After the game, he publicly spoke out on social media X: "I will not be silent about what happened today. I will stand up when I hear or see racism. This is the only way we can progress as a sport and society."

Burnley manager Scott Parker also confirmed after the game that Mebury was emotional during the game and explained the situation to the coaching staff. He said: "He is very sad. We are trying to figure out what happened. Now, this will enter a formal investigation process."

The FA said in a statement that Osmajic was charged with violating FA Rule E3, which covers player misconduct, including using insulting or abusive language. The statement also emphasized that the charge was an "aggravated violation" (Article E3.2) because the relevant remarks involved race or skin color.

Osmajic needs to make a formal response before March 25. However, the FA did not disclose what punishment he might face if the charges are proven.

Preston said in an official statement that they were aware of the FA's allegations, but Osmajic still "firmly denies" the allegations and will submit a formal response in due course. The statement added: "The club will not make further comments until the case is concluded."

The incident sparked widespread discussion about racial discrimination in football matches. If Osmajic is found guilty, he could face a ban, a fine or even more severe punishment.
