Matt Doherty believes it doesn't matter what position you play as long as you can play

Matt Doherty will reunite with his Republic of Ireland teammates at Wolves this week after being called up for a crucial Nations League promotion and relegation play-off doubleheader against Bulgaria.

Matt Doherty needs just two appearances to reach 50 caps for his country and with his impressive form for Wolves he will be hoping to reach that milestone in the games in Plovdiv and Dublin on Thursday and Sunday.

Matt Doherty was transformed into a central defender under coach Vitor Pereira in the second half of the season. He is not sure where Ireland coach Heimir Hallgrimsson will put him. However, Matt Doherty believes that as long as he can wear the national team uniform, he is willing to play anywhere on the pitch.

Matt Doherty said: "I always feel good about joining Ireland. It's been a while since the last suspension, it always feels like a long time ago and then all of a sudden it sneaks up on us.

“But it’s always nice to see different faces, to see lads I haven’t seen for a while, so I always enjoy the international duty. We’ve let ourselves down for a while, even though we’ve had some good results, but now we meet Bulgaria in the play-offs and we have to give it our all.”

“As the senior players in the team, I don’t think we are any different because I’m probably the most immature one among them. However, we formed a very good team with the Irish team. Although the players are young, they are full of energy and everyone gets along very well.”

Matt Doherty also talked about playing as a center back or right back. He said: "I haven't talked to Heimir Hallgrimsson about this at all. We haven't discussed the position. Whether it's playing as a center back or right back, as long as the coach lets me play, I can play any position."

"Even at club level, if I am asked to play, it doesn't matter what position I play in because the coach asks me to play a certain position and I will follow his instructions. I would rather play in other positions than sit on the bench, which is what most players think."
