The Spanish Football Association announced that Spanish defender Pau Cuevassi was forced to leave the Spanish national team due to an ankle injury during the game and return to Barcelona early for rehabilitation.
In the first leg of the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals, when Spain drew 2-2 with the Netherlands, Kuwarsi started the game. However, in the 41st minute of the game, Kuwarsi was injured and left the field due to a fierce fight with Memphis Depay.
The Spanish Football Federation later released a statement, writing: "After an examination by the Royal Spanish Football Federation's medical team, it was decided that the player Pau Cuevassi would return to Barcelona to begin rehabilitation treatment for right ankle discomfort."
According to the Spanish Football Federation, Kuwarsi's initial diagnosis suggested it might be a minor sprain, but after further medical evaluation, it was decided that he could return to Barcelona to continue his rehabilitation.
To fill the void left by Kuwalsi, Spain coach Luis De La Fuente called up Lazio defender Mario Ciela, who will join the Spanish national team in preparation for the second leg of the UEFA Nations League quarter-final against the Netherlands.
The 18-year-old Kuvalsi came from the Barcelona youth training camp and officially became a Barcelona first-team player in 2024. In terms of the national team, Kuvalsi has always represented the Spanish national team. Originally in May 2024, Kuvalsi was selected for Spain's preliminary list of 29 for the European Cup, but was not selected in the end.
Although Kuwalsi missed the European Cup, he was eventually selected for the Spanish U23 national team in July 2024. He joined the team at the 2024 Paris Olympics and successfully won the gold medal, adding an important honor to his personal career.
