Bayern Munich are close to agreeing a contract extension with left-back Alphonso Davies, having successfully fended off competition from Real Madrid to keep the Canadian star.
Davis' contract with Bayern will expire in 2025. Previously, there were reports that Real Madrid hoped to sign the player for free after the contract expires. However, according to The Athletic, Davis is about to sign a new four-year contract with Bayern. At present, there are only minor differences in the details between the two sides, and the contract extension negotiations are basically close to completion.
Davies's contract is about to expire and Real Madrid have been very interested in him, but they now look likely to miss out on the left-back. The news will undoubtedly come as a relief to Bayern fans. Bayern's sporting director Max Eberl warned on Friday that his patience for contract extension talks was limited. He said: "Patience is not my strong point, but we try to use facts to drive progress. We have seen a lot of reports and speculation: 'negotiations broke down, then they were close to an agreement, and then broke down again'. The club and the agent are working hard to finalize a good contract for the player. The negotiations over the past few weeks and months have been frank and constructive, and the differences are gradually narrowing."
During his seven years at Bayern, Davies has established himself as one of the best left-backs in world football. His decision to stay in Munich also represents an important win for Bayern in the battle for talent. Meanwhile, Real Madrid missed out on this defender with great potential, which is a setback for them. Real Madrid have been successful in recent years in acquiring top players on a free transfer basis, such as signing Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain last summer, while Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold is widely expected to join the Bernabeu in the same way in 2025. However, they seem unable to bring the Bayern left-back under their wing.
For Davies, the current priority is to help Bayern regain the Bundesliga title this season and surpass the leader Leverkusen.
